Our Mission

Our World responds to the urgent need to increase the ability of young people to contribute to the solution of global problems, and relate to the world as a community in which they live. Our World is an international initiative developed by educators and development professionals concerned about the absence of effective global citizenship education programs in their countries. The initiative seeks to promote/ strengthen instructional efforts to allow youth to explore ways in which global issues affect their lives; understand and learn how citizens can engage in the processes used to make policies and programs about these issues; and learn how informed citizenship practices (from advocacy to action) by youth themselves can make a difference in the world.

Many academic subjects and cross-cutting curriculum themes contain content that informs issues of global citizenship education, for example, history, geography, economics, civics/citizenship education, peace education, environmental education, human rights and humanitarian law education. Our World believes that there are key global citizenship questions/issues/concepts that can integrate these themes into a new and more powerful instructional framework. We seek to work with educators around the world to develop universally relevant global citizenship education curriculum standards and effective materials. Our goal is to engage students in different countries in developing the knowledge, experience, and attitudes needed to become effective global citizens.
